FIT

After the fire catastrophes in the MontBlanc-, Gotthard- and Tauern Tunnels, the European Theme Network “Fire in Tunnels” was founded to pursue the following targets:

• Results from European and National research projects are to be collected and spread. Particularly by combining the results obtained from different research projects, influence will be brought to bear on a European level.
• Establishing data bases to store basic knowledge about fires in tunnels.
• Working out recommendations on “Design Fires”
• Working out recommendations for planning tunnel systems to conform to fire protection standards
• Preparing acknowledged rules for tunnel operators and fire brigades for prevention, training, emergency managemen and task force assignment.

The FIT Network has 33 members from 12 European nations. Beyond that, it is possible also to become a co-operative member taking part in the Network’s activities and in the exchange of information.

The Theme Network was terminated after 4 years’ work in March 2005. A detailed report with the recommendations worked out by the Network will be available in the very near future.
