ApplicationsFlammable liquids warehousesWhen fighting fires in warehouses for flammable liquids the most important task is to prevent or hinder spreading of the fire. This can be achieved most efficiently by removing the fire's heat to prevent nearby fire loads from catching fire. Because there is no other extinguishing agent having the same cooling ability like water, FOGTEC systems use high pressure water mist to generate a droplet size distribution giving the optimal combination of a large reaction surface for the heat transfer and the minimum size for sufficient momentum of the droplets. Numerous tests have proven, that water mist generated by FOGTEC systems can reduce the temperature during liquid fuel fires much faster and efficient than most conventional systems because of the comparatively poor cooling properties of gas and deluge systems. Using the FOGTEC technology it usually is not necessary to plan for any pre-warning time for the evacuation of people before the actual activation of the water mist system. Water mist is non toxic and environmentally friendly. Also the time required to close fire doors does not delay the activation, since FOGTEC systems do not require completely sealed rooms. The smoke scrubbing effect of FOGTEC systems, thus binding of smoke particles and washing of water soluble gases, considerably reduces emissions compared to deluge and gas extinguishing systems. Since water applied by sprinkler or deluge systems purely has a two-dimensional extinguishing effect, hidden fires can not be reached so easily. Such hidden fires can be found in storage areas when dangerous goods are stored in shelves. Owing to the gas-like behaviour of FOGTEC high pressure water mist systems producing a droplet size distribution having a large content of extremely small droplets, the room is gradually filled with water mist and hidden areas are reached much better than they would be by sprinklers. When using FOGTEC systems the spreading of combustible liquid is avoided because no more than negligible amounts of water penetrate the fire load. |
