Local Application
Local add-on protection for main engines, boilers and purifiers will be mandatory for passenger ships of 500 gross tonnage and cargo ships of 2000 gross tonnage from July 2002 on. The IMO has ruled that the engine rooms of most vessels over 2000 tonnes must be fitted with a water based local application fire fighting system.
FOGTEC high pressure water mist systems offer an ideal protection of such areas without the necessity of engine shut down, personnel evacuation or sealing of the machinery spaces, which would be required with gas extinguishing systems, like CO2.
Beside fast extinguishment with minimised water consumption, rapid washing of smoke particles and combustible gases represent additional benefits. Pipework with diameters of 10 to 40 mm guarantee easy installation.
The pump units for the water supply require only very little space. The overall weight of FOGTEC systems is significantly less than low pressure mist or conventional sprinkler systems.

For the use of FOGTEC systems for local application protection on board of ships approval fire tests according to IMO MSC 913 guideline have successfully been carried out. These tests have been witnessed by major international classification authorities, like Germanischer Lloyd, Lloyd's Register, DNV.
