Intelligent and efficient fire protection solution for high-value technology inside engine spaces

The engine space of wind power spaces represent a very high concentration of values which are exposed to a great risk. In order to avoid a total loss, it is essential to incorporate an extinguishing system as a solution that guarantees operational safety. However, conventional fire-fighting systems, even if installed in compliance with the relevant regulations, will have disadvantages for the operator. These disadvantages can be avoided or minimised by using a FOGTEC high-pressure water mist system.

FOGTEC systems are used to fight fires with water in the form of smallest droplets. This allows to achieve a faster cooling effect than with conventional water based extinguishing systems. Heat radiation on objects in the surroundings of the fire source is rapidly reduced. A growth of the fire and a damaging of the equipment is suppressed.

Because of the only minimal quantities of water used by FOGTEC systems, these are suitable also for areas accommodating electric and electronic equipment.

FOGTEC systems can easily be integrated into new and existing wind power plants. Installation is made easy by the very small pipe diameters and the little space for the system. Maintenance and thus operating costs are low. Specific construction measures as would be required for gas extinguishing systems can be avoided.

Technical Know How at the Highest Level

Fuhrländer AG has, in cooperation with the W2E Wind to Energy company, developed the new Fuhrländer FL 2500. The development and design of the plant prototype was taken charge of by the experienced W2E Team. The construction has been carried out at Fuhrländer AG in Waigandshain. The basic data of the new speed-variable plant of the 2.5 MW class are likely to break world records. The wind power plant has been provided with a hub height of 160 metres and a rotor of 90 metres diameter. The plant has been laid out to comply with the specification of IEC 41600-1, wind class IEC 2a.

Protection of this up to now unique plant is ensured by a FOGTEC water mist system which has been installed in the engine room. Owing to the small amount of space required, there was no problem to integrate the FOGTEC system. The nozzle system could be easily installed because of the very small pipe diameters.

Since FOGTEC systems are operated using pure water, they are 100 % environmentally friendly and harmless to personnel.
