These fires develop rapidly, due to the high fire load of the belt and ventilation conditions to be found in the conveyor tunnels. A fire can therefore cause immense economic damage, primarily by extended stand down times.

Many conveyor belts do not have any fire protection due to the lack of a suitable fire fighting system. Conventional water based systems, like deluge systems, involve large amounts of water, having negative effect on business continuity and representing problems from the installation point of view due to large pipe sizes.
